When Jane Nakato, a citrus farmer in rural Uganda, heard about Chucks Foods Uganda Limited’s “Value Addition” program, she was struggling to make ends meet. Although her citrus farm produced plenty of oranges and lemons, market fluctuations often left her with unsold produce and a shrinking income. That’s when she decided to join the program.
Through the training and resources provided by Chucks Foods, Jane learned how to transform her raw citrus fruits into value-added products like organic citrus powders and marmalades. The company provided her with the tools and equipment needed for processing, as well as guidance on quality control and packaging. With a newly branded line of products, Jane began selling to local supermarkets and even found export opportunities through Chucks Foods’ market linkages.
The results were remarkable. Jane’s income increased significantly, allowing her to reinvest in her farm and hire additional workers from her community. What once was a modest citrus farm became a small business with a promising future. Jane’s success story is a testament to the impact of value addition and the commitment of Chucks Foods to empower women farmers
